This course is not available as a non-credit option for currently
matriculated students. Open to students, alumni and outside
participants. In the beginning was the word. And trailing not far behind
was the first censor. This course, open to professionals, cultural
practitioners, alumni and students, will examine the twin phenomena of
censorship and freedom of expression in the arts and culture.
Some questions to be considered:
. Are some kinds of expression inherently offensive?
. Are battles over freedom of expression a sign of social disarray or
social vitality?
. How have multiculturalism, media conglomeration and globalization
affected the marketplace of ideas?
. Do artists, arts administrators, media professionals, museum
personnel, students, and teachers have an absolute right to free
expression, or is it reasonable that certain limits be imposed upon them?
. What power should communities have in prescribing what is and is not
acceptable to them?
