It is taught in the data processing field, that the value of information is not in possession but in the use of information.  Whic supposes that if you charged $100 to a bunch of people who wanted to dance to music, then you used the music to make the money, and you owe the money..  However, if your use of the music was not worth anything, then the music ddnt generate any value..  And same for copyrights on patents.. you would have to produce a line of products with copyrighted information.. Not just have a patent secret in your head ... or on the hard drive of your laptop  etc.
