I would suggest avoiding Google Docs when posting essays because (from
what I can tell; let me know if I'm wrong) it requires people have a
Google account.  Maybe most people don't mind getting a Google account
to read an article, but it makes the article much less "free".  If
people get a Google account to read the article, then they are more
likely to use Google services.  While I wouldn't say that Google
services are bad, you probably don't want to inadvertently promote
when posting an article on free culture.

A better alternative would be to post the essay on your own web site
or find someone with a web site who doesn't mind posting it for you.
I don't mind hosting essays in some sub-directory of my web site
(http://ossguy.com/) if people need hosting.
