| That's the scary part -- its really hard to figure out how effective it
| will be -- everyone in DC is saying that the law doesn't actually
| mandate this, it just suggests exploring it.
|
| That's not to say FC will be any better if the law gets passed. Its
| certainly a bad thing if it gets passed, but we really have no pull here.
|
| FC @ NYU has compiled a list of districts here:
|
| of reps who are voting on this issue (The Higher Ed committee) but we
| now need to mobilize for Senators.
|
| EDUCAUSE is tackling the issue and doing good PR for it. I'm not sure
| we're going to beat them on it. NYU's Washington Square News is running
| a story on Monday or Tuesday that I've spent extensive time briefing a
| reporter with.
|
| Gavin, what other vectors do you have in mind?

This issue just needs to blow up. Absolutely explode, all over the
media. It has all the makings of an issue that everybody can get into --
"they're taking your kid's financial aid away".

Everybody who can organize against this should do so, but basically we
lose this one (at least in terms of appearances) unless it blows up.
This has passed the House -- whether or not it makes it into law in this
session of Congress, that's a super invitation to reintroduce it (and
*worse* legislation) in the future, and keep pushing for it. The only
way this will die is with a stake through the heart: thousands of
mothers calling their Congressman screaming.

| See, the thing is, as it says in the article, the staffers keep
| claiming that it will have NO effect on financial aid. Does anyone
| have more insight on this?

| no crime.
|
| Most of the coverage of this has been in industry media
| (technology and
| academic circles). Clearly the insider organizing hasn't been
| enough --
| we need parents calling to ask why they're going to take their kid's
| student aid away.
|
| Oh, and why isn't there MASSIVE organizing on Facebook and MySpace
| against this?
|
| (Aside: I've been absolutely dismayed by the ineffectual nature
| of the
| organizing in this issue. The coalition against this trash is,
| sadly,
| neither big enough nor loud enough. Changing that has to be one
| of the
| top policy priorities for SFC and others who care about this.
| Even if
| this never touches the Senate floor, it makes us look weak to
| have let
| this run so far.)
