I think you misunderstand.  All of these projects (Laconica, DiSo,
NoseRub, Buddypress) *are* working together, and have been for some
time.  They're part of the greater effort to pull this off.  They use
exclusively open standards, and strive to duplicate as little work as
possible.

It is because of this that they have begus already to succeed.
