DRM is a terrible value proposition for both producers and consumers.
But it is a seductive fantasy for producers. The reality of this
fantasy has turned into the major labels worst nightmare with Apple
displacing them as the main gatekeeper of access to music, a real case
of "be careful what you wish for".
Activism and consumer pressure has set the terms of this debate and
has communicated the message to those who need to hear it. It has
provided a narrative and a framing for arguments against DRM, and a
means of continuing after it. We shouldn't underestimate this.
