Rob hinted at this but DRM also implies that machines are capable of adjudicating fair uses. The DMCA makes specific mention that the law "should not effect fair use" but in practice this hasn't been the case -- BluRay players assume that unless you are watching the film you are making an illegal copy. In fact any remixing from DVDs is illegal, even if the resulting work is a fair use.

How is locking the door to one's home when one goes out different from
being locked in a cell for life?
Privacy settings come from the right to privacy and from freedom to
association. DRM comes from an extreme misunderstanding of copyright
as a form of (wannabe) perpetual property.
Privacy settings are local, controlled by the user, and circumventable
in technology and law. DRM isn't.
Privacy settings are similar to passwords, not to DRM.
