Apple is announcing something new on Wednesday, which will probably be a
DRM-infected and proprietary (perhaps even all the way to App-store
style) tablet PC. The announcement will be at a morning event in San
Francisco at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater.
Personally, I'm concerned that this might be the shoe we've been waiting
for; a general purpose computer crippled by DRM-enforced dependency on a
single Application Store, where it is illegal for users to install
software from any other source.
I'll be in San Francisco for the FSF and Defective by Design to
coordinate a presence at the event, talking to people and media about
the issues, and making sure that an account of the opposition to Apple's
practices gets into as much coverage of the event as possible.
Can any of you come show support and help out? We'll work on the details
together of how best to present the key messages and how to get them the
attention they deserve -- let me know at johns at fsf.org, and spread the
word to others.
Even if you're not available for the morning, please let me know you're
in the area and interested -- other opportunities (perhaps visiting some
Apple-selling stores later in the day for example) may arise.
Also, if anyone on the list has ideas for cool visuals or actions (along
the lines of the bright yellow HazMat suits, or the Zune funeral,
etc...) please share :).
Thanks,
John Sullivan
