Here's a description of how to make a regular RS-232 serial port/cable into a 3.3vTTL-232 cable.

I'm not sure if this will work with a 5-Volt TTL-232 device like the makerbot.
 
Actually, this is a diagram for a 3.3V in-circuit programmer for a parallax propeller, but the 3.3VTTL-232 *should* be one-pin simpler/easier.
