social.coop: Social network run as a co-op
by Erik Moeller
Hi all,
I thought members of the free culture crowd might be interested in
this -- there's a new social network that's run as a not-for-profit
co-op. It uses the popular Mastodon software, which also means that
it's part of the federated GNU Social / Mastodon universe (i.e.
there's not just one big uber-service like Facebook).
The OpenCollective folks wrote up a nice case study here:
https://medium.com/open-collective/social-coop-a-cooperative-decentralize...
I just signed up - the signal/noise ratio is pretty high so far, and
it's nice to see that they're using Loomio for democratic
decision-making as well.
Not quite a Facebook/Twitter killer yet but if you're not on a
Mastodon/GNU Social instance yet, I encourage you to check it out:
https://social.coop/
Cheers,
Erik
PS: Yes, the freeculture.org mailing lists are back up and running,
now w/ mailman3! If you're getting this mail you must have subscribed
a while ago, but feel free to drop me a mail offlist and I'll take you
off again, or you can do it yourself from
